Question by meganxrenee07: I’m only 21- heart attack?
I’m 21 yrs old- I have severe panic/anxiety disorder. I’ve had 21+ Chest Xrays, Cardiac CTs w/ Iodine & EKGs i nthe past 2 months. They’ve banned me from having anymore tests- due to overradiation & have informed me that I will not die of a heart condition- but I will die of Radiation Poisoning if I continue on this path.
Well- lately my heart has been flip flopping, or “vibrating” or “gurgling” & I feel like I’ve pulled a muscle in my neck, & my back hurts- only in the middle. Also, I get a shiver going up next to my head.

Question by SayWhat?: Best W/O I can do for my love handles? The rest of my body is fine but stubborn fat pockets over my hips?
I gained 50 pounds in 3 months on steroid therapy (Dexamethasone) when I had radiation illness 5 years ago. I’ve lost all the weight and I am fit, but my love handles are a squishy embarrasment! Every time I put on low rider pants, what fits my hips is too small at the waist. I am 5’8″ female, 135 pounds.
I do crunchies every day on my yoga ball and about 25 mins on the treadmill. I’m already taking a thyroid scrip to correct what the roids did to my adrenals. help!
Best answer:
Answer by ĴΩŋ Loose the ball. Do crunches to the left, crunches to the right, crunches sleight up. Feel the burn, Keep doing them, When you do feel the burn you are just about to get started. Work through the burn. It is the only way to make them go. You have to burn them off. You will have to burn, burn burn. Every day. Look for new ab exercises. Find a way to stand up straight and suspend your self like propping yourself on two high tables or hanging from a bar. Then raise your knees to your chest. Over and over and over. When you walk, hold your chest up high keep your back straight and SQUEEEEESSSSHHHH those abs, hard. Make your body work hard. It will get the message and shape up, you will see.
*The clamor for salt reportedly started after rumors spread, possibly by cellphone text messaging, that China would be hit by a radioactive cloud from Japan’s Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear plant, which had been badly damaged during last week’s earthquake and tsunami.
People were under the false impression that consuming enough iodized salt would protect against radiation and that China’s sea salt supplies would be contaminated as a result of the unfolding Japanese crisis.
That sparked long lines and mob scenes in major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou.*
*Thousands of television screens on Beijing’s subway cars displayed a public service announcement Thursday that said: “The local salt bureau has stated that there’s an adequate supply of salt. Salt is a special product that is controlled by the government. Supply is greater than demand.”
Meanwhile, China’s National Development and Reform Commission told price-control authorities to crack down on hoarding.*
what’s my question? I dunno I just thought the story was interesting: “cellphone text messaging” vs “The local salt bureau”…
Question by HYPOCHICK: Hashimoto’s disease what is it and can it cause pain in my muscles?
Two years ago they my cardiologist found I was Hyper when I found myself with a high pulse and he sent me to the Endo, who found two nodules on my thyroid and suggested radiation to kill the gland and said I will just have to take a little pill everyday and all would be fine, well it is not fine! I have gained 35 pounds in a year and feel terrible. Could not get him to increase my medication, 112 synthroid. Found a doctor who will listen to me and she has started me on Armor Thyroid 6 weeks ago, just had blood work done and she called to tell me I have Hashimoto’s disease!
Blood work shows TSH 3rd generation 22.94
T4 total 3.4
T4 Free .6
T3 Free 2.0
T3 Total 71
TPO 62
Thymoglobulin Antibodies 572
She doubled my Armor and wants to check again in 4 weeks. I had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, I know I have muscle pain and tendonitis all the time, but I don’t know if it is from that or not. My doctor suggested going on a gluten free diet, which I am doing, I just want to get back into the game of life! Any suggestions? I feel like the dr I have now is taking me in the right direction, any suggestions?

Question by glasslipper2008: Why am I feeling nausea after my RAI treatment?
Why am I feeling nausea after my RAI treatment? I can’t eat.
I came home Wednesday and haven’t been able to eat since. I have felt nauseated and it’s not going away. I had an intermediate dosage of radioactive iodine to treat papillary carcinoma or thyroid cancer (most treatable kind of thyroid cancer) on Tuesday. Will this ever go away? Its miserable. I have nothing to get rid of since I can’t eat.
I have to stay away from my son who’s 13 for a few days until the radiation is weaker. The sick feeling is bothering me the most. Help!
Best answer:
Answer by Karma Happens Nausea is a side effect of the radiation. Let your Doc know and they can prescribe some anti nausea meds to help reduce the intensity and duration of your nausea. My mother experienced the same thing, it does eventually go away but it can be better controlled with meds. I hope your radiation treatments are over soon and your are totally better!

Question by grassjunkie: In the event of a nuclear disaster….?
People should take Potassium Iodide to prevent damage to their thyroid. What about people who have had their thyroid removed? Would they be affected by he radiation?
Question by Tina: I have extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain. Could this be do to hypothyroid?
I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had the radioactive iodine. Prescribed Synthroid and felt great for about a year. Started feeling bad again and the doc said my levels were still reading hyperthyroid but my symptoms were hypothyroid. After going through several dosage adjustments, I just stopped taking Synthroid because I felt so bad. Now 4 years later Im really having a hard time with extreme fatigue, pain in my knees, legs, lower back, shortness of breath, weight gain and just feeling like I can’t get out of bed. My question is could it actually take 4 years for me to feel the effects of the radiation and to go into “hypothyroid mode”? Now maybe my thyroid levels will match my symptoms.

Question by V: Expert Saltwater Question!?
O.K. i bought a decent rock of yellow Alveopora for a really cheap price and then i noticed that it wasn’t doing too well in my tank. I had it in my tank for almost 2 weeks. When i bought it, i saw that it was recovering from some sort of disease or maybe too much radiation.(It was in a 125gal with 2 metal halides) Now since i bought it it is near the top of the tank of a 55gal with high-output T-5′s. I was wondering if there is some sort of product to help speed up the recovery process or help the polyps come out all the way. I already use Iodine, Strontium, Magnesium, and Phytoplankton regulary. The polyps have been coming out, but look terrible. The other corals are doing great and i’ve had them for several months. Any help, advice, or suggestions would be really appreciated.
(I also got a damaged Pagoda Cup the same day but it’s doing really great and feeding at night!)
(The Alveopora is on the left side of the photo)
Best answer:
Answer by Darwin Ahoy Alveopora, just like Gonipora and other related corals, are very difficult to keep alive in captivity. There may not actually be anything wrong with the coral, but rather you not being able to provide conditions for it to survive. Unfortunately, it’s not yet known why these corals do poorly in captivity, but until we find out, it’s best to leave them on the reef, or in large full reef setups where the correct conditions have the chance to be present.
Question by UR MOM: Is the world going to end in 2012?
This may sound either really stupid, or it could be true. But I heard that a nuclear power plant exploded in Japan so we’re going to be hit with radiation in America, so we have to take Iodine pills to prevent us from getting cancer. And I also heard the plug holding down the oil spill will cause the earth to erode and create oil volcanoes, which will cause our oceans toxic and we’ll have no water supply and our crops will be poisoned so animals will die and we’re next :/ These could just be conspiracy theories, but do you think it’s true?
Best answer:
Answer by Nick Harris Its not true, if anything, the west coast of the U.S would get hit and no one else, but its only if the nuclear power plant explodes (meaning a big explosion, not like other small explosions, atomic bomb big) and the wind carries the radiation over to the U.S but the nuclear power plant could cool and then nothing else would happen.
Question by jss: I have a Thyroid problem, and a serious question?
When I was younger, I had exposure to radiation/nuclear waste. We won’t go into much detail about it, because it gets pretty complicated. But I’ve had a problem, since I was 6 years old. It went on for years, and I had my first period a year later, at 7. My parents took my to doctors and specialists when I was older, more like 12-13 because they never really noticed a problem until I started having other symptoms. I have a goiter, and also my Thyroid changes what it wants to do, either hyper, or hypo, it could never make up its mind, I was going into the doctor every 3-4 days getting my blood drawn to see if we needed to change medication. I got pregnant at 14, and because of this, they couldn’t do the iodine testing on me? I think that was the one anyways, and so we couldn’t go into to surgery. Shortly after having my son, we all moved to a different state, and of course got different doctors. But the thing is, my doctor is saying that my levels are normal now? But I still experience the same problems I was having before, so I’m conflicted. Do goiters go away? Does any type of Thyroid disease balance itself out in time? Could I of passed it onto my son? I’ve tried discussing these things with my doctor, and he just gives me the cold shoulder about it and avoids or changes the topic. Please if you know anything, help.
Best answer:
Answer by 2blest2Bstrest READ CAREFULLY:
You need testing for thyroid ANTIBODIES as well as TSH. TSH ‘norm’ should be .3 – 3 (w/ most feeling best at < 2) but, for diagnosis, would not matter if ANTIBODIES are present. Indicative of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroiditis (cycles between hyper & hypo at start)…main cause of HypOthyroid & is worse (...OR Graves Disease - HypERthyroid).
WARNING: Doctors seem not to want to find/treat thyroid disease. You may have to go to more than one doctor before you get the right tests, interpretation, and treatment. Best wishes.
Question by R W: Why did the surgeon general say it’s not unreasonable to stock up on Potassium Iodide?
Why did the surgeon general suggest that stocking up on Potassium Iodide is a reasonable precaution, while other sources are suggesting that it’s completely unnecessary and no matter how much radiation is released in Japan, no dangerous levels would reach us here?
To be fair, she didn’t suggest that people should actually *use* the PI tablets, but said “stocking up is not an overreaction and it is right to be prepared as a precaution”
Who to believe?

Question by cvegas229: How do you deal with an ungrateful partner?
my husband lost his job 8 months ago, I in turn started working major overtime at work to make up the financial difference. At first he was really understanding, he helped by cooking dinner so I could sleep an extra hour he entertained our son so he wouldnt disturb me but as the months went on he became less involved in helping out around the house.
Last week his old boss called and asked if hed like to return to work, he jumped on the banwagon so fast my head spun – this is where things took a turn for the worst, he started nit picking if I didnt cook or if there were socks left on the bathroom floor he’d blow up about what a pig I am and so on.
My issue is hes only been working about a week now and during that week Ive worked 58 hours from saturday till today (wednesday) when does he expect me to sleep? in addition to the fact that since hes working our 3 year old wakes me up every 10 minutes mommy Im hungry, mommy Im thirsty, so I never get a solid 6 hours of sleep.
Today was the worst ever, he came home from work and found our 3 year old playing with my foundation in the bathroom he poured an entire bottle of foundation in the bathroom sink and proceeded to finger paint with it. My husband spanked him and sent him to his room then proceeded to yell for me to wake up and “see what MY son did” then he went on to critize the fact that “all I do is sleep” and that Im a damn pig and the downstairs bathroom has hair on the floor (oh I forgot to mention that I am currently undergoing radiation for a Thyroid issue thus making my hair fall out when I comb it) he goes on and on about how my hairs been on the bathroom floor for days and why does he have to come home to dishes int he sink he claims all I like to do is eat and sleep and maybe i need to start using the treadmill thats been in the living room for 2 months that I never use and how I have to gain better control of our son because “none of this crap happens when hes home with him” uhhhh when hes home with him they’re both sleeping.
So how do you deal with an ungrateful partner, or is it me who’s causing the issue?
Be honest you cant hurt my feelings more than he did!

Question by Aft: Am I a Hypochondriac?
So I think I have a problem… I am a 23 year old male. I used to have panic attacks when I was about 12-13 years old always kept on thinking I was gonna have a heart attack. Anyways it passed and I haven’t had them since until April this year.. And they found I had a thyroid problem and treated it with radioactive iodine. It’s been 3 weeks since the treatment so here is the question.
So lately like the past 3 months I’ve been checking my blood pressure and pulse constantly. I get pains in my left arm, upper back, jaw, shortness of breath when exercising a litttle bit ( prob due to not being able to exercise until my thyroid is normal ). So before I had the diagnosis of the thyroid problem I had numerous ECG’s , echocardiogram, numerous blood tests. But I still worry that these pains and stuff are cardiac related my gp tells me not to worry but it’s hard. I can’t stop myself on looking up these little pains and trying to make a connection. now I’m wondering if I have a full blown anxiety problem now I never been like this ever in constant worry!
I’m going to my gp in a few days to look at my newest thyroid test to see if the radiation is working, I’m wondering if I should ask for a stress ECG? Do you guys think it would be necessary? Does this sound like hypochondria?
I forgot to add that a couple months ago my doctor perscribed me Ativan, I haven’t used any since my rai treatment. And on my 24 hour urine test I had I had elevated dopamine does that have anything to do with anxiety?
a thyroid scan and it showed I had an autonomous toxic nodule.
Best answer:
Answer by Debbie Hi, I had thyroid cancer 15 years ago, before I had my thyroid removed I had high anxiety, pain down the side of my neck, traveling down my arm to middle finger. For 3 years this went on until they finally gave me a scan to see where the pain was coming from, they could not see any reason why I was getting this pain but did find a cyst on my thyroid. After I had the thyroid removed all pain had left me. However, the anxiety which is a side effect of a thyroid disorder took a lot more years to finally leave, but eventually it has.
Being they treated you with Iodine I’m assuming they had given you a scan in order to confirm nothing unto-wards was happening with your thyroid, so please do not assume that you have anything other than a thyroid disorder. But I would ask your Dr to request a scan of your thyroid to reassure you that all is ok.
My experience with thyroid disorder is that the symptoms are so much like other disorders that it is very difficult to pin point what your symptoms are related to, as thyroid symptoms mimic other illnesses.
I hope this has been of some use.
Question by Taku K: Could anyone tell me about the nuclear accidents?
Hi there. Everyone.
I am a Japanese guy who lives in Tokyo.
I’m worrying about a radiation from a nuclear plant since the great earthquake in Japan.
By the way, we had another nuclear accident in Chernobyl as you know.
First, I’d like you to tell me what the difference between Chernobyl and Fukushima Dai-ichi is.
I know INES said Fukushima is level 6 and Chernobyl was 7.
But, all the reactors from 1 through 6 are very dangerous now.
Because, Iodine was found from the purification plant a little in Tokyo last week.
Do you think we need to raise the level in Fukushima same as Chernobyl?
Sorry for my bad English.
Thank you very much for your reading.
Question by Sarah: Do I have a malpractice case?
5 years ago I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I had radioactie iodine therapy. A few days later I started have major pain in my right side. I went to the emergency room. I told them i just had radiation and that my side hurt. They gave me morphine but it still hurt. I told them I felt like I was out of my mind. They did a scan and told me that I had a pertruding ulcer causing an airpocket in my stomach. They suggested surgery to repair it. I had multiple doses of morphine and no family with me so I signed the consent. When I woke up the doctor told me he didnt find anything. I spent 5 days in intensive care and 2 days n a regular room. A week later when i went to have my staples removed the doctor told me that I had a thyroid storm. Now i have a large scar from my ribs to my bellybutton. I was wondering since the doctors misdiagnosed me what is the best course of action?

Question by larrysheffey@sbcglobal.net: Is it irrational fear to be concerned about recent earthquake events?
There are times when fear is warranted but I wonder what is happening right now on the west coast of the U.S. is irrational. I live in Northern California and people are buying up potassium iodine, even though they are told of the side effects, because there is and anxiety about a radiation cloud from Japan reaching the west U.S. coast this Saturday, March 19th. Authorities have said that there is nothing to be worried about but lots of people don’t believe what the “authorities” are saying.
Add to this a noted former USGS geologist, Jim Berkland, is going on TV and saying that it is highly likely that and earthquake will occur on the west coast of the U.S. sometime this month. He states that earthquakes are traveling along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” from Chile, to New Zealand, to Japan, and will next hit in either Alaska or the west coast of the U.S. either sometime this month or at least before the end of this year. On a religious note; there are people out on street corners preaching about the recent events as signs that the end of the world is near. Some of my neighbors already have their cars loaded for a quick getaway in the event of a crisis.
It just seems to me that the fear and anxiety level has substantially risen, especially on the west coast of the U.S. and I wonder how valid is this fear and anxiety? If you lived in California, Oregon, Washington State, or Alaska would recent events give you more cause for concern? And for you religious folks do you think that any of this fits into prophesy?

Question by Cambeoda: How to best wean 6 month old from breastfeeding to formula with the least amount of engorgement.?
First off, I love nursing my kids. With my oldest I nursed her until she was 17 months old and then she weaned herself. By then I was just nursing her right before bed and when she woke up, so there was no engorgement.
With my second (6 months old) I really want to continue but I have Thyroid Cancer and will have to do the radioactive iodine treatment in July. I need to have her completely weened by then so the radiation won’t go into my milk ducts or into my baby! Unfortunately I won’t be able to just pump and then restart nursing when I’m no longer radioactive.
I need to know how best to ween her so that we’re both comfortable. She will take a bottle ( I had to pump and dump for a day when I had a thyroidectomy )
Any suggestions on how to ween with the least amount of engorgement would be great! I produce ALOT of milk and so far I replaced the 1st morning feeding with a bottle and solids. But I’m so uncomfortable!
Is it best to just gradually replace one feeding with a bottle and wait out the engorgment one feeding at a time or to go cold turkey?
Thanks!
I won’t be able to hold my children for more than 10 min a day for 21 days. I’ll be radioactive as the radiation is expelled through sweat/saliva and other body fluids. AS milk is a body fluid, it will be radioacive too. It might be fine if you’re only getting a scan with the radioacive iodine, but when you get the dose for thyroid cancer it’s alot higher.
I think the benifit of not being exposed to any sort of radiation is a lot higher than the benefit of continued breastfeeding till a year. Realisticly the greatest benefits in terms of immunity for BF is during the first months, after that it’s not as critical. I already feel like crap that I have to stop nursing , it’s just rude to make people feel guilty when they’re doing all they can.
Best answer:
Answer by Pippin First, I would double check the need for permanent weaning. So far as I am aware, radiation treatments of any sort do not permanently ‘irradiate’ your milk or milk ducts. You might check Dr. Hale’s site, or have your doctor contact him. (I don’t think he takes questions from lay-folks anymore.)
If you must wean, then the standard advice is ‘slowly and gradually.’ You have a couple of months, so there’s no rush. Drop one feed at a time and replace with a bottle and lots and lots of cuddles. You do NOT want to wean cold turkey. It’s hard on your baby and will probabably result in mastitis for you.
EDIT: I hope you were not addressing me as ‘being rude’ or ‘making you feel guilty.’ I encouraged you to be sure you had the facts. Unfortunately, many docs are NOT fully educated about breastfeeding and medications/treatments, and will tell women that they have to wean when it’s not necessary.
If it was your choice to do so, you COULD pump/dump for those 3 weeks and then pump and bottle feed. But, if you choose not to, or it’s not feasible for you, then you do the best YOU can do.
Take care of your health and be around for your kids for many years to come.
